Bark & Rock

Oak Limed Pippy

Where: England, UK

Botanical name: Quercus robur

Pippy Oak, also known as ‘cat’s paw’ Oak, features many small knots, some of them in clusters right across the veneer. It has been suggested that they are formed when lush side shoots are grazed on by wildlife, only to grow back and be gnawed away again.

English Pippy Oak ranges from pale yellow through to dark honey brown colours and combines knots and clusters with wild patterns as well as natural Oak grain – this unusual combination is particularly prized by designers.

With this finish we have applied traditional lime across the Pippy Oak veneer to create a whitewashed look which accentuates the beautiful patterns in the wood’s grain while giving it a naturally aged and vintage look.

Oaks are the most widespread, best known and probably the most loved of British native trees. They also grow across Europe, Asia and North America. They can reach heights of over 40 metres and their wood is highly prized worldwide for its resilience, strength, suppleness and gracious beauty.

Our natural and recycled wood collections include hand crafted refillable notebooks, diaries, sketchbooks, photograph albums, guest/visitors books and slip cases. Each wood and stone book is individually made to order in our studio workshop in the UK.

Bark & Rock stocks over 40 types of wood veneer from 6 continents.

Your Bark & Rock product is unique! Our wood veneers are sourced from different areas of the world and are also created using different sections of each tree. Depending on the species veneers can incorporate various features and patterns, including highly sought after burr wood motifs. Veneer production also includes different processes such as crown, quarter and rotary cuts to create various finishes. Each of these methods reveals fine layers of beauty unique to a given species and tree. Some of our finest veneers can be found in our wonderful figure and pommele grain designs. Check our Glossary for more information.

Working with wood veneer means that we can highlight nature’s extraordinary range of organic patterns in a more environment friendly way: 1 cubic metre of planked timber yields 20m² of usable wood whilst 1 cubic metre of veneer delivers 900m² of usable wood giving each tree the optimum yield. Wood is in itself renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. Within our production process we also make every effort to avoid waste and to use non-toxic finishes.

Please note: since wood is a natural product, your Bark & Rock notebook truly is unique and is likely to differ in both pattern and shade from the photographs on our website. These are designed to be indicative of a given type of wood in general.
