Bark & Rock

Chestnut Burr

Where: Europe, USA, Australia, New Zealand

Botanical name: Castanea sativa

Our Chestnut Burr is harvested mainly from Sweet Chestnut trees growing in English forests. Although the species originated in South West Asia it is now common in Europe as well as the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

The trees, sometimes known as Spanish Chestnut, have been around for centuries in Europe where the edible chestnuts are a delicacy. They were a staple carbohydrate in the diet of many woodland based communities in the past and there is documented evidence that Sweet Chestnut trees were cultivated for domestic purposes as far back as 2000 BC.

Sweet Chestnut wood produces an elegant looking veneer and the decorative burr which we use is also popular with furniture makers. It comes in a range of light tan and brown to warm chestnut tones with attractive dark brown inclusions – classic English style from Bark & Rock.

Our natural and recycled wood collections include hand crafted refillable notebooks, diaries, sketchbooks, photograph albums, guest/visitors books and slip cases. Each wood and stone book is individually made to order in our studio workshop in the UK.

Bark & Rock stocks over 40 types of wood veneer from 6 continents.

Your Bark & Rock product is unique! Our wood veneers are sourced from different areas of the world and are also created using different sections of each tree. Depending on the species veneers can incorporate various features and patterns, including highly sought after burr wood motifs. Veneer production also includes different processes such as crown, quarter and rotary cuts to create various finishes. Each of these methods reveals fine layers of beauty unique to a given species and tree. Some of our finest veneers can be found in our wonderful figure and pommele grain designs. Check our Glossary for more information.

Working with wood veneer means that we can highlight nature’s extraordinary range of organic patterns in a more environment friendly way: 1 cubic metre of planked timber yields 20m² of usable wood whilst 1 cubic metre of veneer delivers 900m² of usable wood giving each tree the optimum yield. Wood is in itself renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. Within our production process we also make every effort to avoid waste and to use non-toxic finishes.

Please note: since wood is a natural product, your Bark & Rock notebook truly is unique and is likely to differ in both pattern and shade from the photographs on our website. These are designed to be indicative of a given type of wood in general.
