Organic, sustainable, eco-conscious style from Bark & Rock, just refill with a diary or paper as required - check our new collection of Banana veneer covered books!

Bananas don’t actually grow on trees, they’re classified as one of the largest perennial herbs in the world. Their stems, as opposed to trunks, are covered in leaves and each of these fibrous stems produces one crop of fruit before dying off. On most banana farms they would traditionally be destroyed or left to rot following fruition, releasing methane gas into the environment. Our supply however is harvested at source to create veneer.

The fibre used in the veneer production is from the core of the plant stem and originates from organically grown bananas. It ticks as many green boxes as possible in the veneer manufacturing process too with production taking place close to the farm with zero use of water, minimal use of electricity and no harmful chemicals.

Our natural and recycled wood collections include hand crafted refillable notebooks, diaries, sketchbooks, photograph albums, guest/visitors books and slip cases. Each wood and stone book is individually made to order in our studio workshop in the UK.

Bark & Rock stocks over 40 types of wood veneer from 6 continents.

Your Bark & Rock product is unique! Our wood veneers are sourced from different areas of the world and are also created using different sections of each tree. Depending on the species veneers can incorporate various features and patterns, including highly sought after burr wood motifs. Veneer production also includes different processes such as crown, quarter and rotary cuts to create various finishes. Each of these methods reveals fine layers of beauty unique to a given species and tree. Some of our finest veneers can be found in our wonderful figure and pommele grain designs. Check our Glossary for more information.

Working with wood veneer means that we can highlight nature’s extraordinary range of organic patterns in a more environment friendly way: 1 cubic metre of planked timber yields 20m² of usable wood whilst 1 cubic metre of veneer delivers 900m² of usable wood giving each tree the optimum yield. Wood is in itself renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. Within our production process we also make every effort to avoid waste and to use non-toxic finishes.

Please note: since wood is a natural product, your Bark & Rock notebook truly is unique and is likely to differ in both pattern and shade from the photographs on our website. These are designed to be indicative of a given type of wood in general.
